Welcome to Lyon! A city where travelers and merchants meet since, at least, the Roman Empire.
Here you will discover or rediscover Monplaisir district, birthplace of cinema thanks to the Lumière brothers , a small village in one of the three biggest cities in France.

In a secured building (digicode), at the 5th and last floor, you'll find a warm, cozy and comfortable place, fully equipped and ready to greet up to 6 people.
Possibility to park your car for free on the street or neighbouring ones.

You will find made up beds, towels, baby chair and changing table.

Enjoy a bright comfortable living room, play, chill with your friends/family.
Straight access to the green terrace where you’ll find all the aromatic plants you ‘ll need to cook with.

Take some time to bake yourself warm dishes, pastries or whatever else you ‘re keen to in a fully equipped kitchen (fridge, microwave, oven, gas cooker, dishwasher, deep fryer, coffeemaker, pans, saucepans, blender, pastry utensils, plates, cutleries…)

2/ NEIGHBORHOOD
Easy to come and go by subway, bus or bicycle.
Subway Line D stop Sans-Soucis around 6minutes walking (going to Bellecour, Vieux Lyon, Monplaisir). Monplaisir Ambroise Courtois square is around 5/10min walk through local commercial street.

2 min (200m) to the Frères Lumières shopping avenue (250 shops)
10 min (850m) to the Ambroise-Courtois square (market)
9 min (750m) to the Institut Lumières
6 min (450m) to Subways, Tram and Bus.

I grew up in the area, and, after a few years spent in Geneva (Swiss), I came back to Lyon at the end of 2014.

Never too far from you, I can provide a few more services on request as Breakfast, lunch, diner, local specialties or I can even help you on your discovery tour of the city, just ask for what you need!

Open minded, I’ll greet you with a glass of good cheer if you’d like so and It would be a pleasure to help you during your stay. (You will find maps, brochures and anything else you need to walk easily around the city at home), I can neither recommend great restaurants, bars, activities or places & how to go there, if you want to.

Monplaisir is one the last real "village spirit's place" in Lyon.

Everything is close by : Market places (3 times a week with the bio one on Wednesdays), bakeries, cafés, bars, restaurants, places to chill, (250shops), cinema, museums…

Take your time to get to the local market at Ambroise Courtois square or feel free to rent a bicycle (Vélo'v station 1 minute walking from the building) to head to "Bellecour" in about 15min, "Opéra de Lyon" in about 20min, or if you prefer just take the subway directly to others places like "Vieux-Lyon", "Fourvière" or "Parc de la tête d'or"...

Here you are at the birthplace of the Lumière brothers and their most famous invention, cinema.
Monplaisir district is an autonomous and active village in one of the 3 biggest cities in France.

Where does the name Monplaisir come from?

Monplaisir has been created by Lord Marie Vital Henry. He was the owner of the Tournelles Castle where now stays the Mercure Hotel (Albert Thomas Court), its last tower has been demolished by Louis Pradel in 1960.
In 1828, he turned his domain into an estate and, in a huge urbanism operation; created 400 plots of land connected by streets and named it Monplaisir village. This name was choosen to draw people away from the center of Lyon, where the air was just unbreathable because of the poor condition by these times (wastes were just dropped in the Rhone…). Lyonnese use to come to Monplaisir to enjoy the air and lots of them had a secondary house in Monplaisir.
Others say that this name comes from all the hostels locals use to get to to spend some great time… who knows?


But now, what means Monplaisir?

For a long time, Monplaisir has only been considered as an industrial district of the city. The emblematic companies from the XXth century, as Calor, Berliet, Lafont or the Lumière cinema factories finally made way to this little village where life is good. Only located 15 minutes away from the city center of Lyon, this 25 000 people old working-class district is delimited by the Albert Thomas street on the north side, the Jean XXIII boulevard on the east side , Berthelot avenue in the south and the railway on the west side. But for the locals, the heart of Monplaisir is located around the Ambroise-Courtois” place. This lively place is where the locals meet, play petanque, do ice skating on the ephemeral ice rink during the winter or just enjoy a sunny day at one one the numerous terraces that are around.

“Monplaisir is a good compromise between the iner and the outer Lyon. We feel good here, there’s everything we need. We really are able to live in autarky here.” Confirm M Stephane Guilland,local councilor who’s been leaving here for about 10 years. Indeed, no need to get in center or to La Part Dieu to shop. The market that takes place 3 times a week on the Ambroise-Courtois place is often crowded. Just as the Freres Lumière avenue. This central street offers up to 250 chops, high-ends stores mostly, just like Barithel Butcher and Lassagne cheese maker where you will find a long queue, especially on week ends.

“Expensive stores is a realty, but here in Monplaisir, we are first looking for quality products” claims Philippe, executive senior , who maintains that he hasn’t been in the need to get to the city center for “the past two months”.

Even better, this district owns all the community facilities. Close to ten public and private schools, a university built in an old tobacco manufacture and a great cultural space that is unique , the Lumiere Institute wich makes the locals very proud.
