Less than 2 hours West of Paris, at the entrance to the Loire Valley, Chateau de la Barre lies secluded in a 100 acre private park of meadows, woods, a pond and XVIth century fortifications surrounding a romantic flower garden.
This elegant chateau oozes history, having been in the family of the present owner, Comte de Vanssay, for more than 600 years. Magnificently renovated, the precious antiques are showcased against a backdrop of vibrant designer fabrics. Each of the five guestrooms and suites are luxuriously appointed,with sweeping views over the gardens and valley.
Guy and Marnie de Vanssay, your hosts, warmly welcome their guests and enjoy sharing their knowledge of their region with them.
Twice a week, a prestigeous Grand Siècle dinner is hosted in the XVIIth century dining hall, with all the family silver and crystal.
Tailor made stays can be organised to include : race car driving around the Le Mans track, Montgolfier hot air balloon flights departing from the chateau terrace, wine tastings, visits of private chateaux unopen to the public ...
Chateau de la Barre is also a perfect destination for a chic small wedding, as it also has it's own family chapel.

Around

The scenery immediately surrounding the chateau is peaceful and buccolic, ideal for bicycle rides and hikes. There are many quaint villages with farmers' markets. Nearby, the knight templars' fortress of Arville is fascinating, and the castle of Montmirail can also be visited, with it's guard rooms and dungeons dating back to the times of Henri II, King of England. (12th c). The little valley of the Loir, a 20 min drive away, has many wineries and artisal shops. Le Mans is a 40 min drive and the medieval Plantagenet city surrounded by the longest Gallo Roman walls in France is a totally undiscovered gem, soon to be UNESCO heritage site. The light show in the summer is magical. Within an hour are all the famous Loire Valley chateaux, although they are very crowded to visit, so guests always appreciate returning to the peaceful elegance of Chateau de la Barre at the end of a busy day.
